She gives us an original sock pattern she wrote herself, each time we go to this gathering. This time it was a lovely sort of clock pattern, where it was a lacy stripe going down the side of the ankle only. She had done it in a mottled yarn (an old opal with no striping) and it was lovely in that simple colorway. I'm not sure I'll do this pattern since I am so happy knitting stockinette, but then again it may be just the thing for a yarn I haven't swatched yet.

Funny how sometimes something that should have been obvious will strike me just totally out of the blue. I read that paragraph, and thought, oh! I could do something like that, some kind of lace pattern or cable or something, down the side of a sock--it wouldn't be that difficult, I don't think, I need to try it! I mean, who knows, it might be awful to try to figure it out without a pattern, but it might be fun to try, and I've got several skeins of sock yarn that I'm not all that crazy about--a couple of old Opal 2002's and some pretty plain Sockotta in denim colors. Hm.
