Wednesday, March 24, 2004:

I'm about half finished with a kitty blanket knit in a really (to me) interesting Canadiana that I had in my stash. It's a really pretty slate blue/rose combination, with a little white and an even smaller amount of green. Sounds weird, but it's very pretty. I'm doing a double moss stitch pattern, I think that's what it's called. Anyway, I'm liking it, but I'm getting bored.

So I cast on the Zelda that I bought last week from Elann, for a little immediate gratification. This Zelda is weird. I get the Elann knittable sample subscription. I usually don't actually knit them, but sometimes I do. I was intrigued by the Zelda sample, so I knit it up into a swatch, and fell in love.

The swatch was a color called Wood Violet, and I bought some of that, and I also bought a spring green called Willow, which is what I'm knitting up into a scarf now, for a friend. It's made of wool and linen, and it's very thick-and-thin. The thin parts are as thin as thread, and the thick parts are about the size of a chunky yarn. So it knits up into a quite weird fabric, almost like a lace in spots. I hope it's not too weird for my friend, but I don't think it will be. It's certainly fun to knit with.

I bought the violet, and the green, and also a couple of space dyed colors--I think one was called "Winter Sky:" mostly white, with some purple and gray. The other one is pinks and purples. I hadn't intended to buy this one, it was an impulse purchase. I'm glad I did, although I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. The colors would be perfect for one of my nieces, but I'm afraid the resulting lumpy, bumpy product might be a little too odd for a teenager. We'll see.

I mentioned the Size 35 needles the other day. I haven't used them yet, because I didn't have any other needles large enough to pair with them--the largest I had was 13. So I ordered a pair of 15s and a pair of 17s, and now I have every size of straight needles that Brittany makes, I think. Yes, I sometimes think it's a sickness. Or, well, I know it probably is--obsession/compulsion. But I kind of figure that mine is small, and as long as I'm not buying furs or diamonds, or filling up the house with stacks of newspapers, I'm mostly okay.

And as an aside, that Elann purchase put me over the top, and I now have a $50 credit there. I'm going to try to wait for awhile until something else wonderful comes up, but right now I'm fighting an urge to go see what colors they have left in Zelda . . .

I'll try to take a picture tonight. This yarn is weird!
