Monday, December 06, 2004:

I work with several very talented, very intelligent people, and I am occasionally prone to feeling a little, well, inadequate. I know that everyone has their own talents, and I know I'm talented in my own way, but sitting in a meeting hearing people talk about computer programming could make anyone feel inadequate.

Then I looked at the new issue of Knitty, and I was reading this pattern while I ate my lunch, and I had a bit of an epiphany.

Which was, hey, I bet none of those guys could knit a tea cozy, or could read this line and understand it:

Next Row [RS]: K2, YO, ssk, [k4, yo, p2, yo] 3[4] times, k4, k2tog, yo, k2. 36[44] sts.

But I can. So there.

Good for you Willa! You are so right about that. They wouldn't have a clue, would they? Whenever I'm feeling really inadequate, I think about the things that I am good at and realize, as you do, that everyone has special talents and things that they do differently than other people, and it really helps me. There is someone in my office who would rather read a technical computer manual than a fiction book. She loves computers and programming. We have had a conversation where she expressed the fact that knitting or something like that would drive her nuts because she can't sit still. By the same token, reading a technical computer programming manual would drive me straight up the wall. I'm so glad I know how to knit and love it so much. Would you believe that I even considered majoring in computer programming when I was in college a long time ago? What in the world was I thinking??

Thank you for your post. It really made my day.
